Live-in, day shift or part-time: choose the right fit
Match the working arrangement to your daily needs rather than assuming longer hours will solve every gap.
Map the times you need help
Write down when support is needed throughout a normal week. Morning school runs, evening cooking and continuous care are very different requirements. A single person should not be expected to cover every hour of a day.
Think through travel and accommodation
For commuting staff, discuss travel time and realistic arrival and departure times. For live-in staff, agree suitable accommodation, privacy, meals, rest periods and days off. Include these details in the hiring discussion.
Keep the workload realistic
Separate specialist work from general support. A helper who cleans is not automatically qualified to deliver nursing care or repair electrical systems. If responsibilities compete at the same time, consider separate roles or shifts.
Review the arrangement together
After joining, set a time to discuss how the schedule is working. Agree any changes to tasks, hours or pay with the person rather than adding duties without discussion. Keep both parties’ copies of the agreement up to date.
