A first-week onboarding plan for your new staff member

Turn a successful hire into a clear working routine with practical induction, supervised access and an early review.

Prepare before the joining day

Keep the agreed role, hours, wages and supervisor details ready. Confirm arrival time, address, entry process and any equipment or clothing the person needs to bring. Make sure the household or office knows the new employee’s responsibilities so they are not given conflicting instructions immediately. For live-in staff, prepare the agreed accommodation and explain privacy and shared-space arrangements. A candidate should not discover materially different working or living conditions only after travelling to join the role.

Use the first day for orientation

Show the work areas, supplies, relevant equipment and places that require permission to access. Explain the normal routine and how to report uncertainty, damage or a problem. Introduce the designated supervisor and the person who provides cover when that supervisor is unavailable. Keep instructions manageable and demonstrate unfamiliar equipment instead of assuming prior knowledge. Access to keys, records or systems should match the role and be approved deliberately, rather than being granted because it is convenient in the moment.

Review work with specific feedback

During the first few days, check the agreed outcomes and ask which instructions were unclear. Explain a preferred method where it matters, while allowing the employee to suggest a workable sequence. Separate a genuine skill gap from unfamiliarity with your household or organisation. Avoid changing duties several times without acknowledging the change. If a practical problem affects hours, supplies or workload, resolve that before judging performance. Keep feedback about observable work and discuss concerns directly and respectfully.

Hold an end-of-week conversation

Review the task list, schedule, communication and any training still needed. Confirm that pay arrangements, breaks and time off are understood. Write down agreed changes and discuss material changes to the original brief with Hire Staff Islamabad where they affect the placement. If the arrangement is not working, refer to the written terms and report specific concerns rather than waiting for them to grow. An early review establishes a habit of clear communication; it is not a promise that every placement will succeed.

Your practical checklist

Use these points when preparing your brief or discussing the next step with Hire Staff Islamabad.

  • Confirm arrival, access and agreed role terms.
  • Prepare equipment and any accommodation.
  • Explain one reporting and escalation route.
  • Give specific feedback during the first days.
  • Record changes at an end-of-week review.

A common question

Should a new employee work independently immediately?

Independence should match demonstrated skills, clear instructions and the responsibilities involved. Plan appropriate supervision and introduce sensitive access deliberately rather than assuming experience removes the need for induction.
