A kitchen handover plan for your new home cook

Help a newly hired cook understand your menu, equipment, grocery process and meal routine without relying on repeated last-minute instructions.

Write a normal-week menu outline

Start with the meals your household actually eats, approximate portions and serving times. Identify routine preferences separately from occasional guest requests. Explain who approves menu changes and how early the cook should raise an ingredient shortage. If a household member follows a professionally advised diet, provide the agreed instructions and appropriate professional guidance; the cook should not be expected to diagnose needs or invent a treatment diet. Share only the personal information required to prepare the meals.

Show the kitchen and supplies

Explain equipment controls, storage areas and any items that need special care. Identify which utensils and ingredients are reserved for particular uses and who handles equipment faults. Agree cleaning responsibilities around preparation, serving and the end of the shift. A kitchen handover should include where waste goes and how supplies are replenished. Do not assume a cook knows the history of an appliance or the owner’s preferred storage system. Make it easy to ask before using unfamiliar equipment.

Set a simple grocery approval process

Decide who prepares the shopping list, who buys supplies and how spending is approved. Explain how receipts are kept and what to do if an item is unavailable. If the cook shops, include the journey in working hours and discuss transport or delivery arrangements. Separate routine household purchases from requests for guests or special events. Review quantities after the first few days to understand your actual needs rather than immediately treating every surplus or shortage as a performance problem.

Review the first week constructively

Give specific feedback about timing, portions, taste and communication after ordinary meals. Ask which instructions were unclear and whether the agreed workload fits the hours. If you add laundry or whole-house cleaning, discuss how that changes the role instead of adding it during the handover. Keep the hiring brief and written terms available. For Islamabad and Rawalpindi homes, confirm arrival and society-entry arrangements early so avoidable access delays do not disrupt the meal schedule.

Your practical checklist

Use these points when preparing your brief or discussing the next step with Hire Staff Islamabad.

  • Write meal times and normal portions.
  • Identify the person approving menu changes.
  • Show equipment and storage instructions.
  • Agree shopping limits and receipts.
  • Schedule a short first-week review.

A common question

Should a cook buy all groceries independently from day one?

Agree an approval process first. Start with a clear list, spending arrangements and receipt handling, then adjust the level of responsibility as the working routine becomes established.
