Hiring a maid in Islamabad is one of those jobs almost every household does badly at least once. Someone is recommended by a neighbour or a cousin’s driver, they start the next morning with nothing written down, and six weeks later they stop turning up. Nobody took a copy of the CNIC, nobody knows the permanent address, and there is no way to follow up. That cycle is so common in the twin cities that most families simply accept it as the cost of having help at home.
It does not have to work that way. This guide covers what a maid actually costs in Islamabad in 2026, how to choose between full-time, part-time and live-in, the checks that genuinely reduce your risk, and the handful of employer habits that decide whether a placement lasts three weeks or three years.
What a maid costs in Islamabad
A full-time maid in Islamabad earns roughly Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000 per month. That is a wide band because the work varies enormously, so it helps to understand what moves a salary up or down it.
- Hours. A four-hour morning shift costs substantially less than a ten-hour day, though not proportionally, because travel time does not shrink with the hours.
- Property size. A two-bedroom apartment in E-11 is a different job from a five-bedroom house in F-7 with a lawn and guest rooms.
- Scope. Cleaning only sits at the lower end. Cleaning plus cooking plus laundry moves toward the top, and at that point you may genuinely want a cook cum helper rather than a maid.
- Experience. Someone who has worked in a similar household for years, and can be verified doing it, commands more, and is usually cheaper in the long run.
- Live-in. Live-in roles pay at the upper end with food and accommodation provided on top.
On top of salary, an agency charges a placement fee. The established standard across Islamabad and Rawalpindi is one month of the agreed salary, charged once, after the person actually starts. Be careful with anyone who wants money before a placement begins, or who takes a cut from the maid’s wages. Both are common and both create problems later.
A word on very cheap quotes
Full-time, part-time or live-in
Choosing the wrong arrangement is the single most common reason a placement fails in the first month, and it is entirely avoidable. The three options are genuinely different jobs, not just different hours.
Full-time (day shift)
Eight to ten hours a day, six days a week, going home at night. This is the default in Islamabad and it suits most families who want consistency without giving up privacy. It is also the easiest arrangement to fill, because it is what most experienced maids want.
Part-time
Two to five hours daily, or alternate days. This is the right answer far more often than people assume, particularly in the apartment sectors like E-11, F-11 and G-11 where the property is small and both adults work. If the honest requirement is two hours of cleaning a day, hiring full-time creates an awkward situation where nobody is sure what the maid should be doing for the other six hours.
Live-in
Realistic in Islamabad only where the property has a separate servant quarter or a spare room with an attached bathroom. Live-in works well for large households, for families with young children, and for anyone who needs early-morning or late-evening cover. Be completely honest about the accommodation before anyone is shortlisted. The fastest way to lose a live-in placement is for the candidate to arrive and discover the room is not what was described.
Where people find maids, and why most routes fail
There are four common routes in Islamabad, and they fail in different ways.
Word of mouth
Free, fast, and the source of most of the horror stories. The problem is not that the person is dishonest; it is that nobody in the chain has verified anything. You are trusting your neighbour’s judgement about someone your neighbour also never checked.
Facebook groups and classifieds
A genuine pool of candidates, with zero screening and a meaningful fraud rate. If you use these, treat every claim as unverified until you have seen the original CNIC and spoken to a previous employer yourself.
Informal agents
Individual agents operate across Rawalpindi and Islamabad and can be quick. The recurring issue is that many charge the candidate rather than the client, sometimes a month’s salary or more. A maid who starts a job already in debt to the person who placed her will leave the moment a marginally better offer appears, and you will be hiring again by month two.
A domestic staff agency
A proper agency is worth paying for only if it does the things you cannot easily do yourself: verify identity against records, call previous employers, record a permanent guarantor, put duties in writing, and stand behind the placement with a replacement guarantee that costs the agency money when it fails. If an agency is not doing all five, you are paying a finder’s fee for a phone number.
The verification checklist
Whether you hire through an agency or directly, these are the checks that actually reduce risk. Run them before anyone starts, not after something goes wrong.
- Original CNIC, not a photocopy. Look at the original, photograph it yourself, and check the photo matches the person in front of you. Verify the number against NADRA records where you can.
- Permanent address, confirmed. A current address in Islamabad is not enough. You want the permanent village or family address and a way to reach someone there.
- A guarantor. A named person, with their own CNIC on file, who vouches for the candidate. This single step deters more problems than any other.
- Two previous employers, called. Not a written reference, a phone call. Ask why the person left and whether they would rehire.
- Police character certificate. Arranged through the local police station. Worth insisting on for live-in roles and for anyone who will be alone with children.
- Medical basics for childcare. If the maid will handle infants, a basic medical check and hepatitis screening is reasonable and normal to ask for.
Questions to ask at the interview
Interview at your home rather than anywhere else. You learn more in ten minutes watching someone in the actual space than in an hour of conversation elsewhere.
- Which households have you worked in, and why did you leave each one?
- What did a normal day look like in your last job, hour by hour?
- Which parts of the work do you not want to do? (An honest answer here is a good sign.)
- Where do you live now, and how will you travel here each day?
- What salary are you expecting, and have you been promised anything by anyone else?
- Who can we call who has employed you before?
- Are you comfortable with the duties list we have written down?
Pay attention to the travel answer in particular. A candidate commuting ninety minutes each way from Rawat or Bhara Kahu to F-7 will not last, no matter how good the interview goes or how much they want the job today.
What to put in writing
Most disputes between households and domestic staff in Islamabad come down to something nobody ever agreed out loud. A single page, signed by both sides before joining, prevents the majority of them.
- Monthly salary, and the exact date it is paid
- Working hours, including start and finish times
- Which day is the weekly off, and how leave is requested
- A specific duties list, written as tasks rather than as a job title
- What is not included, which matters as much as what is
- Notice period on both sides
- Eid bonus or annual increment if you intend to give one
- For live-in: the room, meals provided, and visitor rules
Write duties as tasks, not titles
How to keep a good maid
Finding someone competent is the easy half. Households that keep staff for years in Islamabad tend to do the same few things, none of which cost much.
- Pay on the same date, every month. Late salary is the most common reason good domestic staff leave, ahead of pay level.
- Give a real handover in week one. Do not expect someone to guess how your household runs.
- Respect the weekly off. Cancelling it repeatedly reads as a message about how the relationship works.
- Raise issues early and directly. Almost everything is fixable in the first fortnight and almost nothing is fixable after six months of silent irritation.
- Increment annually. Even a small one signals that staying is worth something.
Common questions
How quickly can I hire a maid in Islamabad?
Through an agency, expect a screened shortlist within 48 hours and a completed placement in three to five days. Directly, allow two to three weeks if you intend to verify properly, because reference calls and a police certificate take time.
Should I pay an advance?
No. Not to an agency and not to a candidate you have just met. A legitimate agency charges only after the placement starts. Advance salary requests are common and are the single most frequent pattern in domestic staffing fraud in the twin cities.
What if the maid leaves after a month?
If you hired through an agency with a replacement guarantee, they replace her at no further cost. Ours runs for six months from the joining date with no cap on the number of replacements. If you hired directly, you start again from scratch, which is the real cost of the informal route.
Do I need a police verification?
It is not legally required for domestic employment, but it is strongly advisable for live-in staff and for anyone who will be alone with children or elderly relatives. It is straightforward to arrange and the request itself tends to deter the wrong candidates.
If you would rather not run all of this yourself, that is precisely what we do. We place verified maids and housekeepers across 47 areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, including F-7, E-11 and Bahria Town. Every check above is run before you meet anyone, and you pay nothing until someone starts work.
