Hiring a driver is the household placement with the most at stake. You are handing someone a vehicle worth more than they will earn in several years, along with your children on the school run and your own safety in traffic. It is also the role where people do the least checking, usually because the candidate arrives holding a licence and that feels like enough.
It is not enough. This guide covers what drivers actually earn in Rawalpindi and Islamabad in 2026, which licence class the job legally requires, how to run a driving test that tells you something useful, and the verification steps that separate a ten-year placement from a disaster.
What a driver costs in Rawalpindi
A full-time driver in Rawalpindi earns roughly Rs 35,000 to Rs 80,000 a month. Rawalpindi generally sits slightly below Islamabad for the same work, with two exceptions: Bahria Town and DHA Rawalpindi track Islamabad rates closely because the households there compete for the same pool of experienced drivers.
- Rs 35,000 to Rs 45,000. Entry level. Valid LTV licence, a few years of city driving, single-car household, local runs only.
- Rs 45,000 to Rs 60,000. The common band. Experienced, comfortable on the Expressway and motorway, school runs plus office duty, handles fuel and servicing errands.
- Rs 60,000 to Rs 80,000. Executive or multi-vehicle households, long hours, frequent motorway travel to Lahore or Peshawar, or a driver expected to be presentable for business guests.
- Above Rs 80,000. Usually HTV licensed, protocol experience, or a driver doubling as a personal assistant.
Night duty, seven-day availability and living in all push the number up. So does asking the driver to also wash the car daily, which is properly a separate job. If you want both, either pay for both or hire a car washer alongside.
LTV, HTV and which one you need
Pakistan issues driving licences by vehicle class, and hiring someone with the wrong class is a genuine legal and insurance problem, not a technicality.
LTV (Light Transport Vehicle)
Covers cars, jeeps and light vans. This is what you need for almost every household driver in the twin cities. If the person will drive your Corolla, Civic, Fortuner or a family van, LTV is the correct class.
HTV (Heavy Transport Vehicle)
Covers buses, trucks and heavy vehicles. You need this only for commercial or large-vehicle work. An HTV holder can usually drive light vehicles too, which is why HTV drivers often command a premium even in household roles.
Check the expiry date, not just the card
Family, office, school run or night duty
These are genuinely different jobs and mixing them up is the usual cause of a driver resigning in month two.
- Family driver. School drops, market runs, hospital visits, airport pick-ups. Irregular hours, lots of waiting. Needs patience more than speed.
- Office driver. Fixed route, fixed timings, often with document or bank errands attached. The most predictable version of the job.
- School run only. Part-time, morning and afternoon. Cheaper, but a genuinely limited window, and expect to pay a premium per hour because those hours are unsociable to fill.
- Night duty. Late pick-ups, hospital emergencies, airport runs at 3am. Should always carry a supplement, and should never be sprung on a driver hired for day work.
Write down which of these you are actually hiring for, including the weekly off day. A driver who agreed to office hours and is then asked to do midnight airport runs will leave, and will be right to.
How to run a real driving test
Most people skip this or do it badly, sitting in the passenger seat for five minutes on a quiet street. That tells you nothing. A useful test takes twenty minutes and covers the conditions the job actually involves.
- Test in your own vehicle, not theirs. Handling differs and you are hiring them to drive this car.
- Include a busy road. Murree Road, Peshawar Road or the Expressway at a moderately busy hour.
- Watch reversing and parking. More household vehicle damage comes from parking than from driving.
- Ask them to take a route they do not know, using directions. You learn how they handle instruction under mild pressure.
- Sit in the back for part of it. Driving style changes when the employer is not beside them.
- Note whether they use the mirror and indicate. Habits under observation are the best case, not the average case.
If children will be in the car, do one run on the actual school route at the actual time. Traffic around school gates in F-7, F-8, Satellite Town and Bahria is its own skill.
Verification that actually matters
For drivers specifically, run these before anyone touches the keys.
- Original CNIC. Photograph it yourself and confirm the photo matches the person.
- Licence class and expiry. Verified against the record, not just eyeballed.
- Traffic challan history. A pattern of speeding or signal violations is directly relevant to whether you hand this person your car.
- Two previous employers, called. Ask specifically about accidents, fuel honesty and punctuality.
- Permanent address and guarantor. Not the current rented room, the permanent family address with someone reachable there.
- Police character certificate. Strongly advisable for any driver carrying children.
Fuel, maintenance and the trip log
Fuel disputes are the most common ongoing friction in driver placements, and they are almost always a systems problem rather than a dishonesty problem. Decide the method on day one and write it down.
- A simple trip log: date, destination, odometer start and end. Ten seconds per trip and it ends most arguments.
- Fuel by receipt, reimbursed weekly, or a fixed monthly allowance. Either works; mixing them does not.
- Agree who books servicing and who pays at the workshop.
- Agree what happens with minor damage before it happens, because it will.
Do not deduct damage from salary without agreeing it first
Mistakes that cost people their car
Hiring on the same day you meet
Urgency is the single biggest risk factor. Every fraud pattern in domestic staffing relies on the employer being in a hurry. If you genuinely need someone today, use an agency with a standby pool whose checks are already complete rather than skipping the checks.
Not keeping the guarantor details
A guarantor who has given their own CNIC and phone number changes behaviour. It is the cheapest deterrent available and most households never ask for one.
Paying a large advance
Advance salary requests in the first week are the most common pattern in domestic staffing fraud in the twin cities. A modest advance to a driver who has worked for you three months is a different thing entirely.
Ignoring the commute
A driver living in Rawat or Adiala Road and working in F-7 will resign, however keen they seem in the interview. Ask where they actually live and how they will get to you at 7am.
Common questions
Should the driver have their own licence renewed at my cost?
There is no obligation, but many employers cover renewal for a driver who has been with them a year or more. It is inexpensive and it keeps you legally covered, which is in your interest more than theirs.
Can I hire a part-time driver in Rawalpindi?
Yes, and for school-run-only requirements it is usually the right answer. Expect a higher effective hourly rate because those split morning and afternoon hours are hard for a driver to combine with other work.
What if the driver has an accident?
Your insurance position depends on the licence being valid and the correct class, which is precisely why the licence check matters. Agree a damage policy in writing at hiring, and keep the trip log so there is a factual record of where the vehicle was.
How quickly can a driver start?
Through an agency, a screened shortlist in 48 hours and a placement in three to five days. Directly, allow two to three weeks if you intend to verify properly, because challan history and reference calls take time.
If you would rather not run the licence checks, challan history and driving tests yourself, that is our job. We place verified drivers across Rawalpindi and Islamabad, including Bahria Town, DHA Rawalpindi and Satellite Town. Current pay ranges for every role are in our salary guide.
